Varsity Blues?....NOT A CHANCE!!!!
In a most improbable scenario and against all odds:
- On the road against a very respectable opponent;
- While battling through numerous injuries and multiple missing key defensive starters;
- Against a highly motivated opponent who had everything to gain (Play-off spot);
TEXANS WIN, TEXANS WIN, TEXANS WIN!
After four smash-mouth quarters of high caliber Texas 5A Football Saturday resulting in a highly impressive turn of events, the Texans went from would-be spoiler with noses pressed against the glass, to semi-masters of their own destiny.
Now with a little help this upcoming weekend from a few District foes and a big victory of their own on Senior Night, our "Start Strong - End Strong" Texans will find themselves still suiting up on Week 1 of The Second Season.
This author's Game Balls go to:
- Texan Defense - When lesser boys-of-character would have found it easy to quit, play it safe and cower under the excuse of injuries and a perceived better opponent, this band of head-hunters forced punt after punt and on the final drive, bent without breaking and were rewarded with being between the lines and on top during the final tick of the clock.
- Texan Offensive Line - 206 clock-burning rushing yards and almost 5 yards per carry spread across 6 different rushers. And if there was even one penalty called on this bunch the entire game, I sure missed it.
- (Half a Game Ball) Texas Fans for being one of the best group of traveling fans in the District. But only Half a Ball for needing to help out a little more on game-impacting Defensive 3rd Downs. (Stand up and Get Loud!!)

Freshman Red Individual Stats
I will be posting all the stats at the end of the season, game by game team stats as well as basic individual stats. When I started tallying tackles, I didn't give any partial credit but instead tried to focus on the player who really made the play. This proved quite difficult in many instances and, looking back, I wish I had given credit for a tackle to anyone involved as it would have given a better picture of who was around the ball and involved in the most tackles. But, alas, I didn't, and sorry, I'm not going back through all the game film at this point!
Anyway, with that criteria, heading into the final game of the season, two players are tied for the lead in tackles, with three more within striking distance (though it would take a great performance in the final game).
Any guesses as to who these five defenders are? And don't cheat and go back to look at all the write-ups!

Freshman Red Pounds Keller Central 30-14
The freshmen took to the air last night to soundly defeat the Central Chargers. On a night when we were unable to run the ball effectively for most of the game, the offense connected on four touchdown passes, three of which were more than 30 yards.
The game started slowly with Central going three-and-out on their first three possessions and Northwest's first two ending with a fumble and a punt. However, a perfectly executed screen pass from Dusty Cloud to Chase Morrison went 82 yards for the Texans' first touchdown. The Texan defense shut out the Charger offense in the first half with one drive ending on a Parker Kneis interception and the next resulting in a field goal attempt which was blocked by Duke Kicinski. The Texans scored again before half when Cade Garner hit Ethan Davis in the end zone for an 11-yard score with no time left on the clock. The pass was fitting vindication for a great catch by Davis two plays earlier that would have set up the Texans at the 1-yard line had it not been ruled incomplete.
The Texans added to their lead in the third quarter when a scrambling Garner hit Sammy Jennings who had released behind the secondary for a 33-yard touchdown. This scenario would repeat itself later, this time with Garner finding Cameron Watkins all alone in the end zone for a 30 yard score. The defense gave up two touchdowns in the fourth quarter as Central rallied, but it was too little too late. And the offense finally got the running game going late in the game, grinding out the final minutes with 7 running plays for three first downs and time running out on a first and goal.
The Texans had difficulty with the Charger's run blitz, but finally wore them down in the end for a respectable 90 yards on 22 carries. The real success was in the passing game: 9 completions on 14 attempts for 206 yards and four touchdowns. By far the best passing performance of the year. The defense held the Chargers to 8 net rushing yards and 135 yards through the air.
The leading tacklers were Parker Kneis, who played a great game with an interception and a fumble recovery to go with his 6 tackles, Jacob Parker and Duke Kicinski each with four, and Lane Allen with three.
The Texans will wrap up their winning season against Saginaw next week. You heard it here. Go Red!

Varsity Focuses on.............."High Noon"
After an impressive win over Keller on the road last week, our Varsity boys had to go "Once more into the breach" against the 4th and final State Top 15 Ranked team on the schedule, the Coppell Cowboys.
Though the outcome wasn't the desired one, once again, the Boys refused to quit and scrapped till the final gun as the frozen scoreboard belied the gritty effort on both sides of the Texan ball.
And now, in spite of a few more checks in the loss column than the win column with 2 games remaining in the season, parity in the 7-5A District means that if our Texans can make a statement against respectable Keller Central this week and then dominate the Rough Riders on Senior Night the following Friday, this bunch of Die-Hards will be in the Play-offs in only the 2nd year of the new program.

Freshman Red Comes Up Short Against Coppell 19-12
Another tough loss for the freshmen, fighting hard till the end and nearly ruining Coppell's perfect record. The game was much closer than the final score indicates. Of the four losses we have suffered, three of them could have just as easily gone our way. I hope these are character-building events for the boys that will help them develop. After all, that's what 9th grade football is all about, right?
The boys started the game three-and-out, then gave up a 58 yard touchdown drive to fall behind 7-0. However, they answered right away with a 50-yard scoring run by Chase Morrison on a reverse. The failed two-point conversion attempt would prove critical in the game. After forcing a fumble on the Cowboy's 18 yard line, Dusty Cloud hit Ethan Davis on a slant for a touchdown. Another failed 2-point conversion attempt left the Texans with a 12-7 lead. Coppell added another touchdown in the second quarter and the game went into halftime with the score 13-12.
The Cowboys would cling to that one-point lead throughout the third quarter and well into the fourth. Coppell didn't score their last touchdown until less than a minute left in the game, and even then, Northwest continued to fight and was able to drive the ball to midfield before time expired.
Although the game was a defensive struggle, the difference was Coppell's passing game, which racked up 140 yards on a completion percentage of over 60%. The leading tacklers for the Texans were Joe Gonzalez, who had a great game anchoring the line, Sammy Jennings and Parker Kneis all with 6 tackles, Lane Allen with 4, and Duke Kicinski and Dylan Housley each with 3.
Now let's toughen up, get stronger, and beat Central!

Freshman Red Comes Back Strong Against Keller 45-14
As predicted on this page (they don't call me The Man for nothing), the freshmen came back with a vengeance this week, racking up 416 yards of total offense and holding the Indians to -8 net rushing yards.
Northwest started fast with Reggie McDaniel running 29 yards for his first of two rushing touchdowns on the Texans' fourth play from scrimmage. Keller answered quickly as well, however, with a 70 yard scoring drive to tie the game at 6-6. The Texans would take charge after that, going up 14-6 on a 20-yard touchdown run by Cade Garner. Garner would later hit Ethan Davis on a beautiful pass and catch in the end zone to go up 14 points. Dusty Cloud added a touchdown pass of his own when he hit Cameron Watkins on the post for 35 yards. Cloud then switched from thrower to receiver and caught Garner's second touchdown pass for 41 yards just before halftime, to take a 33-8 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Texans would add two more touchdowns, the first on McDaniel's second touchdown run, this one for 18 yards. Then Jacob Parker would top it off with a 43-yard scamper through the heart of the Keller defense for a touchdown and a season-high 45 points for the game.
This Keller team was by no means the best our boys have faced, but nor were they the worst. Our boys played well on both sides of the ball as well as on special teams and dominated the game from start to finish. Congratulations on bouncing back so strong and returning to winning form. Now let's take it to Coppell! Go Red!
CORRECTION: I credited Reggie McDaniel with two touchdowns, when actually, the referees had called him down at the 1-yard line on the run in the second half, and Cade Garner ran it in on the next play.

Freshman Red Loses to Carroll 33-12
This week will be an abbreviated write-up for a couple reasons. First, I was unable to attend and have had to rely on film which makes it difficult to get a feel for the game. And second, it has been a rough weekend for me on the sports front...Northwest Freshman and Varsity, Texas A&M, the Rangers, the Cowboys. I just don't have it in me.
However, even though the freshmen didn't play their best by any means, there were some highlights (and yes, I will be posting a video). The team had their best performance of the season throwing the football, completing 61% for 126 yards. And the defensive secondary did some solid tackling to keep the score from being even more lopsided.
Dusty Cloud ran for his first touchdown of the season and Chase Morrison added yet another touchdown catch. Duke Kicinski added two sacks on defense. The leading tacklers were Samuel Jennings with 9, Cameron Watkins with 5, and Parker Kneis and Duke Kicinski each with 4.
I'm afraid the Dragon mystique may have gotten to us this week, but something tells me we will bounce back big against Keller. Go Texans!

Upon Further Review......
Just another Varsity loss at Southlake?
Hardly!
Look Closer:
-New coaching staff in only their second year of building a vertically integrated MS-to-HS "Program" incorporating brand new Offensive and Defensive schemes
-Unequivocally the toughest 2010 football schedule in the entire state of TX, at any level: 4 games against Top 25 ranked teams and 2 of those against Top 5 ranked teams
-Barrington Thorpe still running with total reckless abandon over and thru defenders and Mason Decker and Sawyer Cooper punishing defensive lineman with pancake blocks.....on the LAST DRIVE of the game.
-A visiting side full of raucous NHS fans clad in red, cheering till the final tick of the clock
-Creative offensive play calling which directly resulted in 14 points, late in the 4th qtr.
-A higher % of starting under-classmen than any team on the Texan schedule.
There's still no quit at any level on this Texan team and the near and far future both look bright.

Freshman Red Dominates Fossil Ridge 38-6
Having opened the season with four very close games and posting a record of 2-2, the Texans establish a winning record with a rout of Keller Fossil Ridge. The Texans' performance was marred only by a sloppy second half offensively, in which they contributed three turnovers to the total of eight in the game. But the defense was the real star of this show, holding the Panthers to a net 2 yards rushing and a total of only 103, with four interceptions.
After an interception by Caleb White, the Texans drove 63 yards on 7 plays to score on a 10 yard run by quarterback Cade Garner. A Panther fumble led to the next scoring drive of 49 yards capped by a 5 yard touchdown run by Parker Kneis. Chase Morrison's leaping interception would set up yet another score, this time through the air with Morrison catching a Garner screen pass and taking it 21 yards for the touchdown. With all three 2-point conversions successful the Texans took a 24-0 lead into the halftime break.
The Texans' third interception by Sage Ricker led to the their final offensive touchdown when he returned the pick 35 yards to the Panther 19 yard line. Two plays later Reggie McDaniel ran 13 yards for the score. The defense would add the punctuation to a stellar performance when Tristan Demargosian took yet another interception to the house and then converted the 2-pt conversion as well.
The smothering defense was led by Jacob Parker, who was all over the field, with 7 tackles, Lane Allen, who joined Parker at linebacker in the game, with 4, and Duke Kicinski and Joe Gonzales each with 3.
It has been exciting to watch this team come together and I was happy to see the cohesiveness that has developed. The players are constantly building each other up and they play with great enthusiasm and confidence. It should be a great time watching them slay the Dragons next week. Go Texans!
