Freshman Season

The Freshman Red team wrapped up their winning season last night, going 6-4. The record could have easily been 9-1 with a few breaks here and there. It has been a great time watching their journey this year, coming together as a team and getting better each week. I saw every player on the team contribute, and watching them constantly build each other up was inspiring.

Though of course there were standouts on both sides of the ball, it is encouraging that this is not a 1-horse class, with a single star player carrying the team. This team has a number of really good athletes that show promise in developing into great players. With the incredible season of triumph over adversity the varsity team has had, with the possibility of going 4-6 overall and making the playoffs after a winless season last year, in arguably the toughest district in the state, it's an exciting time.

It's been a blast, and I can't wait till next year. I would say the future of Northwest Texan Football is in very good hands.

Everybody come out and cheer the varsity on to the playoffs tonight, and stay tuned here for the final season stats.

Freshman Red Shuts Out Saginaw 18-0

The Freshmen wrap up their season in style with shutout of Saginaw. Though the Roughriders' power rushing game chewed up the time and some yards (they ran twice as many plays in the first half), they were never able to penetrate the Texan red zone and never really threatened. The Texans on the other hand, made the most of the opportunities they had.

After a Roughrider punt, the Texans took their opening drive 58 yards on 6 plays for a 1-yard touchdown run by Reggie McDaniel. The Texans' next possession culminated with a 19-yard touchdown pass from Cade Garner to Chase Morrison. The next time the Texans touched the ball, Morrison went 46 yards for his second touchdown on a pass from Dusty Cloud to take an 18-0 lead into halftime.

The second half saw neither team move the ball effectively. Saginaw applied tremendous pressure with blitzes and Northwest continued to stymie the Roughriders' rushing game. Their lack of a passing offense (5 attempts for no completions) made it difficult for them to mount any kind of comeback in the second half.

The offense showed great execution in the first half and the defense did a great job of stopping the run and not allowing any big plays. The Texans had a balanced offensive attack, at least in yards, with 114 yards on the ground as well as through the air. The defense was led by Joe Gonzalez with 8 tackles, Parker Kneis with 7, Duke Kicinski with 6 and Jacob Parker and Dane Ezell each with 5.
