Another tough, close game and this time the freshmen BRING HOME THE WIN against Midlothian thanks to a power rushing game (139 yds on 37 carries) and a few big plays. The Texans got on the board first with a 1-yard touchdown run by Corey Althouse set up by a 26-yard pass from Dusty Cloud to Chase Morrison. The Panthers immediately answered, however, with a touchdown run of 70 yards. Morrison would later haul in another 25 yard pass, this time from Cade Garner, and this time he would stretch over the goal line for a touchdown giving Northwest the lead 14-6 after the two-point conversion. Midlothian threatened again just before half but the drive was squashed by a Morrison interception on the Texan 1 yard line.
The defense scored its first points of the season on a safety by Joe Gonzalez, set up by one of several excellent punts by Dusty Cloud that pinned the Panthers on their own 3 yard line. The Panthers scored again late in the game on back-to-back pass plays of 42 and 21 yards, the second for a touchdown. A failed two point conversion attempt left the Texan lead at four, 16-12. After Midlothian's onside kick attempt was smothered by Jacob Jennings the Northwest offensive line, which played well all night, ran down the defense and the clock with a 6-play, 52-yard drive culminating in a 21-yard touchdown run by quarterback Cade Garner.
The Texans played better in every facet, racking up three touchdowns and 186 yards of total offense. Special teams continues to be a strong point with several good returns, punts and kickoffs. The defense, while continuing to give up the occasional big play, held the Panthers to a completion percentage of less than 30% on 27 attempts and gave up its fewest points and yards of the season. The defense was led by Joe Gonzalez and Ryan Reed with 4 tackles, and Parker Kneis and Dane Ezell, each with three.
A bye week and then district play! Let's give Guyer a welcome to 5A they won't forget!
