Freshman Red vs. Guyer Highlights

It was tough filming because we were so close to the field and had such a low angle...plus, the bleachers were rockin!

A Varsity that Just Won't Quit

Our Varsity boys have had two rough outings in the past three weeks.
They had a game of breaks that kept going the other way in Midlothian and then went on the road to face a formidable Guyer team tonight.

In spite of it all, there doesn't seem to be any quit in our proud Texans!
They fought hard to the end of both games.
And coaches were still "coaching up" our kids late in each 4th qtr. as if it were the spring game.

With Character like that, there's no doubt more scoreboard success lies just ahead!

Go Texans!
We're all firmly behind you and very proud of you!

Freshman Red Beats Guyer 22-15

What a game Thursday night! It didn't look good for the Texans in the beginning with Guyer scoring a safety on our first possession, and our first 8 offensive plays resulting in 4 penalties, said safety, and a fumble. And I won't get into the officiating here other than to say it was less than stellar. A point to which the faithful, exceeding Guyer's in excitement and nearly in number, would attest. The Texans, however, showed a tremendous amount of heart in persevering! And little did we know that such a rocky start would portend such a frenetic first half of football...

The Texans finally got on track with a connection from Cade Garner to Chase Morrison that went for 31 yards. Although the drive eventually fizzled, the next drive led to a Morrison reverse for 21 yards and a touchdown. Northwest added another touchdown when Cameron Watkins stayed with a tipped pass from Dusty Cloud and took it 71 yards for the score. The game remained close as the defense struggled early, allowing 216 rushing yards in the first half, leading to two touchdowns for Guyer and a 15-14 lead. But on the first play of the next drive, Reggie McDaniel would break free on a 63 yard race down the sideline for a touchdown, part of a 104 yard day on 12 carries. The back and forth of the first half would end in stunning and fitting fashion, with the Texan defense stuffing a quarterback sneak at their own one yard line to preserve the lead.

The defense would continue that momentum into the second half, allowing no points and only 39 yards of total offense for the rest of the game. Enough cannot be said of the job the offensive and defensive lines did against perhaps the largest fronts we have faced. I'm quite sure Guyer expected their size to wear our boys down in the second half, but it turned out just the opposite, with our offense registering two key first downs to run out the clock and allow us to take the victory formation for two snaps.

Truly a great team effort on both sides of the ball. The defense was led by Duke Kicinski with 6 tackles, Sammy Jennings with 5, Joe Gonzalez with 4, and Cameron Watkins, Jacob Parker, Tristin Demargosian and Chase Morrison, each with 3.

Guyer Freshmen

The Guyer Freshman Black (A) team won their first two games by a total of 3 points, against Waxahachie and Cedar Hill. As of this writing, their result from the game with Mesquite Horn has not been posted. With our Freshman Red having been involved in three close games themselves one might surmise that neither team has any give-up in them. Could be another nail-biter. Go Red!

Freshman Red vs. Midlothian Highlights

Update: Video was mistakenly made private...fixed now. Sorry!

Freshman Red Wins 22-12!

Another tough, close game and this time the freshmen BRING HOME THE WIN against Midlothian thanks to a power rushing game (139 yds on 37 carries) and a few big plays. The Texans got on the board first with a 1-yard touchdown run by Corey Althouse set up by a 26-yard pass from Dusty Cloud to Chase Morrison. The Panthers immediately answered, however, with a touchdown run of 70 yards. Morrison would later haul in another 25 yard pass, this time from Cade Garner, and this time he would stretch over the goal line for a touchdown giving Northwest the lead 14-6 after the two-point conversion. Midlothian threatened again just before half but the drive was squashed by a Morrison interception on the Texan 1 yard line.

The defense scored its first points of the season on a safety by Joe Gonzalez, set up by one of several excellent punts by Dusty Cloud that pinned the Panthers on their own 3 yard line. The Panthers scored again late in the game on back-to-back pass plays of 42 and 21 yards, the second for a touchdown. A failed two point conversion attempt left the Texan lead at four, 16-12. After Midlothian's onside kick attempt was smothered by Jacob Jennings the Northwest offensive line, which played well all night, ran down the defense and the clock with a 6-play, 52-yard drive culminating in a 21-yard touchdown run by quarterback Cade Garner.

The Texans played better in every facet, racking up three touchdowns and 186 yards of total offense. Special teams continues to be a strong point with several good returns, punts and kickoffs. The defense, while continuing to give up the occasional big play, held the Panthers to a completion percentage of less than 30% on 27 attempts and gave up its fewest points and yards of the season. The defense was led by Joe Gonzalez and Ryan Reed with 4 tackles, and Parker Kneis and Dane Ezell, each with three.

A bye week and then district play! Let's give Guyer a welcome to 5A they won't forget!

Varsity vs Allen

Where do you start with a 46-7 final score? Well I will give you my bloggers opinion! The final score doesn’t tell the complete story of this game. No excuses allowed, just pure observation. Allen is a good football team. They flew to the ball on defense and had more than one big play guy on offense. There is a reason they are ranked #5 in the state. Enough about them! In the first half of the game all Allen had on offense was the big play. The Northwest defense had a few assignment issues that were exploited by a great team. I am not going to say they wouldn’t have scored on those drives, but let me remind you of the 1st and Goal in the 2nd quarter and all they got for the effort was a field goal. That 3 points were the only points the Texan D allowed in that quarter. On offense the team moved the ball well on them. Back to back calls against the offense killed a very efficient and productive drive that looked like it was going to send the boys in at halftime with 14 on the board. (You take the 2 big plays away in the first quarter and we score on that second quarter drive to end the half. The halftime score is 14-10; your Northwest Texans lead at halftime!) The second half was just like the first half. Allen was deep and it showed. Those Eagles never did just overpower and push the Texans around. The team played with heart for all 4 quarters of that game. I said it before and I will keep saying it. This team is close, we will win football games and I predict an upset is blowing in the wind! Good turnout and support for the game last Friday. Now lets roll into Midlothian and wreck their Homecoming plans!

Freshman Red Falls to Allen 15-12

Once again the Freshman Red team fell victim to big plays and lost a close game. The Texans started the game in the hole with Allen running the opening kickoff back for a touchdown. A blocked extra point attempt left the score 6-0. An interception by Parker Kneis led to a 15-yard touchdown pass to Chase Morrison early in the second quarter, and a failed two-point conversion attempt left the game tied. However, a breakdown in pass coverage on the final play of the first half resulted in a 30-yard scoring strike for Allen allowing them to go into halftime with a 6 point lead. The Eagles would add a field goal early in the fourth quarter to increase the lead to 9. The Texans immediately answered with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Corey Althouse to pull within 3, but would get no more chances. Allen chewed up the remaining minutes with 4 first downs on 9 straight running plays and ran out the clock facing first and goal.

The Texan offense was much more potent this week, doubling their total yards and points from their previous effort. Chase Morrison was a standout with solid kickoff returns including an exciting near run-back at the end of the first half, as well as 4 catches for 45 yards and a touchdown, and Cade Garner threw two touchdown passes. The defense was led by Jacob Parker with 6 tackles and Duke Kicinski and Sammy Jennings each with 5.

Overall, we had a great performance against one of the largest and best programs in the state. Our boys fought hard throughout the entire game, but in the end Allen's size, in girth and numbers, wore us down. However, you can see this team coming together and all I can say is...Midlothian better pack a lunch.

Wow! What an tremendous moment watching the student body rush the field in celebratory support of "their" NHS Football team! Next time we need to get the Band and Drill Team to join in the fun too! I suspect there will be many more opportunities this year to do so!

Huge congrats to this entire coaching staff for building such HEART in a team that has already proven that it WILL NOT QUIT!

Start Stong, End Strong!!!!
